In 2018 a small study done the United Kingdom showed a 40 percent reduction in cigarette consumption over a period of one week when participants used a CBD inhaler when their nicotine cravings kicked in.
Although this study was done on a small scale, experts say that the use of CBD could be an effective tool in the treatment to stop smoking. Dr Tom Freeman, Senior Academic Fellow at King’s College London, stated that “findings suggest that cannabidiol has promise as a novel treatment for tobacco addiction”.
The 2018 study was done with 24 participants. This was a double-blind placebo study
in which each person in the group received a random inhaler of either CBD or a placebo. Twelve individuals received the CBD inhalers while the other twelve received the placebo. Each person was instructed to use the inhaler when they had a craving to smoke. The test participants that used the CBD inhalers when their cravings kicked in saw a 40 percent reduction in tobacco use while the placebo participants showed no change in the amount of cigarettes they smoked within that same week.
Maureen Talbot, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “This small study demonstrates promising results with a drug that didn’t seem to cause side effects and it will be interesting to see if a larger trial supports the findings.”
It is important to mention that even though this study showed significant results, there is still more research that needs to be done. As more advancements in the production of CBD and more research studies are done, there is a good chance that CBD made be added as part of many smoking cessation programs available in the market today.
