Could CBD Be Effective for Treating Arthritis?

With CBD being widely available and more research being done around the benefits of CBD, researchers are finding positive results in the reduction of arthritis pain caused by inflammation. A current article published in Current Opinion in Rheumatology. 31(3):271–278, MAY 2019, summarized that CBD may be an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis if the product was targeting the right pain receptors.  


A 2016 publication on the National Center for Biotechnology Information website, concluded CBD was shown to reduce inflammation in joints in rats when added topically through the skin. The article concluded that the information provided by the test indicated that topical CBD application could potentially reduce pain related to inflammation causing arthritis pain. The summary went on to say that pain relief was achieved without any evident side-effects.


In a recent article published on, Dr. Benjamin Caplan was interviewed by Abbie Rosner, where they discussed cannabis being a powerful anti-inflammatory agent. Dr Caplan mentioned that cannabis operated differently than anti-inflammatory medications because unlike over the counter and prescribed drugs, cannabis did not show signs of any severe side effects.


With all the advancements in CBD products and new research coming out each year, it is important to highlight that there is still more research that needs to be done to prove that CBD is an effective treatment for arthritis pain in humans. While more conversation and research needs to be done, it’s encouraging to know that there may be more natural treatments available for arthritis pain in the near future.
